Question about Technorati - sorry, not fully ‘on-topic’ - how does the ranking work?
I periodically get there and see some info for my blog. Like today, it has ‘Authority 45′ yet I don’t have any idea if that is - anything!
Does that number want to be higher? Lower?

I was curious about that as well. I read up on it and it says on the Technorati site:
“Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to a website in the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has.”
So, the higher the number the better!
I was originally going to buy a template, but instead found a really clean free one I liked and tweaked it. Instead I spent money on a custom graphic for branding purposes.

That’s certainly a good option, too. However, buying a template is an alternative for people who may not be able to tweak their site, for whatever reason that might be.

In my comment for your article: Freelance Footprints – Discovering the World of Online Freelancing, I wrote that I’m busy with a new project. Well, that includes a whole new theme! At first I wanted to buy one, but couldn’t find any which fits my need! But then when I had given up I came across a site and found a real clean theme and right now I’m tweaking it to optimize it just the way I want it!
But I agree with you, you have to have an orginal theme / graphics in order to attract attention!!
